Is it possible to change the awful new SF Arabic typeface?

Very disappointed with Apple’s new typeface for Arabic which has changed for the iOS 15 and OS Monterey updates. The new SF Arabic font looks hideous, effectively a Comic Sans version of the Naskh script. It is much harder to read than the previous font, and renders extremely small. This is not the quality I expect from Apple and I speak for myself as a student of Arabic and for many Arabs and others who use the Arabic script such as Persian speakers who have expressed this disappointment. The previous font used until iOS 14 was much better, more elegant and balanced the serif feel of the Naskh script without making it look too formal. Apple has not seemed to provide this font anywhere to download.

That being said, my questions now are:

  1. I would like to know whether it is possible to change this as a system font on iPhone and Mac?
  2. Can Apple provide the previous Arabic font to to download to at least use in Notes and documents? And what was the name of the original typeface?

Extremely disappointed with Apple.

It's not possible as far as I know to change the default system fonts in either MacOS or iOS. Apple has to do that.

MacOS has a large number of Arabic fonts already installed for use in apps. You can see them by going to font book and creating a smart collection.

You can add fonts to iOS with an app like AnyFont and use them in apps with a font menu.

The previous system font for the Arabic script is not included in Apple's preinstalled fonts, and there is no information about it that I could find provided by Apple for developers.

I thought the previous system fonts were Geeza Pro and then maybe Damascus? I have Catalina on up available here and will try to check...

PS I see both those in Monterey. Damascus in a "Supplemental" Folder.

Noto Naskh has serifs on the alif and is slanted. The previous system font did not have serifs and is not slanted. They are not the same.

Yes, I see now.

I have looked carefully in both Catalina and Big Sur, and as far as I can tell, there is no font supplied with the OS that really matches the one used in the menus and dialogues. Mysterious.

The default font when I want to write something seems to normally be Geeza Pro.

After more research I think it could be Myriad Arabic Regular.

On my (clean install) Monterey, this is in Font Book but has to be downloaded.
