time machine won't back up files because they are read only. How do I change this. I haven't had any problem until today



I am using OS Monterey

Most likely, that drive was rendered "read-only" because it failed and should henceforth be considered unreliable.


At your option consider reformatting the drive and returning it to service. It is quite likely to remain useful (though operating in a state of failure) for a period of time. Whether that period of time is days, weeks, months, or years cannot be determined. That is one reason one and only one TM backup drive does not comprise an effective backup strategy. Get another one at your earliest convenience, and add it to Time Machine. TM will back up to as many backup drives as you choose to provide.


When a drive becomes unreliable to the point you no longer want to keep reformatting it, throw it away. They can't be fixed.
