iPad 5th generation- supported

Hi. We have a 5th gen iPad (Feb 2017) used for our business. A message has appeared stating ‘from April 2022 this iPad will no longer be supported’. (We are looking to get a new one anyway) However I wondered exactly what that means. I’d like to give the old iPad to my elderly Dad who would use it for internet searches and possibly a crossword app or something. Does it mean it would stop working or updating completely? Is there any point in giving it to him as a gift now if it’s going to not work within the next few months…? Thanks in advance!

Apple never sends no such messages to any of its product user base on what products will, or will NOT, be unsupported in the future.

Apple NEVER, EVER does this.

I suspecr the message you recieved is a scam and faulty/NOT trustworthy and, definitely, NOT true!

If ANYTHING AND maybe more true to facts, is the first iPads that MAYBE be unsupported by Apple ( AND NOT until Sept/Oct 2022 )will be the 2014 iPad Air 2 and the 2015 iPad Mini 4, and maybe NOT a 2017 iPad 5th gen.

I believe that you received a scam message and is NOT true or to be trusted.

Your 2017, iPad 5th gen should continue to be supported, by Apple. at least, until Sept/Oct 2022.

Where did you see this message exactly?

As mentioned Apple never ever sends such messages.

I agree with MichelPM above, it's very likely a scam.

Apple never warns ahead of time what devices will stop being supported with software updates. The 5th generation iPad will still be supported until September / October 2022, and likely another year also. That all of iPadOS 15 and iPadOS 16 when it's released.

That notice has nothing whatsoever to do with an iPad.

This is NOT even from Apple.

This is for some cloud/remote data service from Western Digital.

Does your iPad backup its data to this service?

If so, you will need to find anduse another online, offsite device data backup service to backup the data on your iPad, if this is the case.
