other users taking storage MacOS Mojave

What is behind system information that "other users" taking free space and its up around 50Gb?

And is there some way to clear that space which is obviously related to some sysbug or?

On first screenshot you can see that "other users" is grayed and nothing can be done.

On the other hand, omni disk sweeper shows that no other user takes storage more than 10,7GB in total which is correct.

Is that some kind of a bug or what and how can I resolve this issue coz I cannot free up more space.

This MBAir is needed as backup laptop and must be still in use due to certain apps that are installed on and cannot be installed on new OSX versions.

Current MacOS is Mojave 10.14.6

Thank you in advance.

Br,

Dann

Wow! I cannot believe some of the idiotic changes that Apple has been doing with each update. It is not enough to confuse the average user, now they need to confuse the more technical users as well. Glad I saw your post as I've learned something new.

@dan385, If this is indeed the same as the old "Other" category, then either this value is being incorrectly reported by the macOS Storage Management feature or it may be valid and the data is hidden away in an APFS snapshot. Make sure all of your backups have completely transferred to external media and that all app updates are finished installing as well as macOS updates since macOS also creates a temporary APFS snapshot when updating apps and macOS. These temporary APFS snapshots are automatically deleted once the process has successfully completed. If you deleted any files since the APFS snapshot was created, then those "deleted" files are still contained within the hidden APFS snapshot. Once the APFS snapshot has been deleted, the storage space will be released.

Monterey has changed the name of the Other category to Other Users, but it means the same thing. Content managed by the operating system that you cannot remove. See used and available storage space on your Mac and in particular the Other section:

While this panel was calculating the storage for Other Users, it kept that name, and when it was done, no Other or Other Users was shown. Instead, it changed the name to System Data, and in my case, that was 38GB.

As far as I could check no backups are pending or some apps needs to be updated but sys update is waiting to update to Monterey version and as I mentioned in first post, the goal is to stay on Mojave because I have some apps that are older and are not applicable with newer MacOS versions.

I haven't download or run anything that is related with Monterey so I guess that can not be the issue or am I wrong?

In case that I'm wrong it is only 12,13GB from 50GB that is occupied by other but where is the rest and how can I cancel this Monterey software update that is waiting?

I've tried to delete snapshot through terminal and everything went OK, but storage space remains the same I'm afraid it's because it is stated "dataless" so I think that there was nothing in that snapshot.

Now I'm stuck and don't know what else to do except to reinstall complete OS.

For now I would like to try every option in order to avoid reinstallation :)
