I’ve received an email that looks as if it’s from apple saying my account has been locked due to suspicious activity is this a true message from apple?

It's a scam. Delete and ignore.
That one is possibly real. Usually occurs when someone knows your Apple ID, but not your password. After making enough wrong guesses (I think it's five), the account is automatically locked to prevent further attempts.
