Mac Mini M1 Bluetooth Range is very bad

Hi,

I'm using the same bluetooth earphone (version 5.0) for my iPhone 12 and Mac Mini. In technical page, both device have the same bluetooth version (5.0), but for the range, bluetooth on iPhone have really good range but on Mac Mini, it only have a very short range for bluetooth device.

How to fix it?

Thank you

Mac mini, macOS 12.0

Two Thoughts:

  • Update the macOS
  • Reinstall the macOS

Time Machine Backup:

Important: Prior to the update or reinstallation, Create a Time Machine Backup of your Mac, so that you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong, doing the install.

A. Update your Mac:

I see you have macOS 11.0. So, check for 11.2.3 (the most recent version)

  1. Go to: Apple menu
  2. Select: About this Mac
  3. Click: Software Update... button

B. Reinstall your macOS:

If the above does not work, then consider reinstalling the macOS, backing up first.

Why a Reinstall:

If you reinstall the macOS, nothing would be deleted. All intended, original files and Apps that came on your macOS would be reinstalled (which include the Bluetooth). It’s all about keeping your system files intact.

The iMac's wireless card and antenna, are built up and away from the high speed USB cables and devices.

The Mac Mini's wireless card is on the back of the logic board and the antenna is built into the bottom cover.

Try moving the USB-C SSD on the right side and the USB 3.0 drive on the left side, back behind the stand and away from the Mac Mini to see if that helps. You may also need to move that USB 3.0 hub out to the left and away from the Mac Mini.

Yes, it's work a little bit. I've try disconnect all my stuff but only add 3-4 feet (+/- 1 meter) only. And then I try to re-arrange like your suggestion but still the same when all is disconnected. And do another test, but yeah, it's work but not like I was expected. I think it still was bad antenna positioning design on Mac Mini.

Thank you

I tend to agree with Rudegar, that something is not right... Seems like either the antenna is bad or it is disconnected from the wireless card and needs to be checked out.

You are welcome. A few things...

Resetting the Bluetooth Module:

Prior to Big Sur, you could always reset the Bluetooth Module to fix issues like this. Thing is, they (the developers at Apple) took that away (and I'm not too fond of them doing so). So, provide Apple with feedback, instructing them to bring this trick back. See my second comment on my user tip (I authored it prior to this being taken away): Use "Reset the Bluetooth module" to Fix Constant Bluetooth Disconnections - User Tip
