Cannot Disable SIP in Recovery Mode.

Hi,

I tried to disable SIP in recovery mode but got this message instead "the current recovery system is not paired with the requested volume. ensure that the booted recovery system matches the main system that is being modified."

What should I do to be able to disable SIP?

I'm on M1 Macbook Air, Monterey.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.0

On an Apple Silicon Mac you have to be in One True Recovery to do certain things like disabling SIP.

I ran into the same issue as OP. Getting into the recovery modes did not seem to allow disabling SIP. Any of them would report that the recovery system was "not paired" from the requested volume.

What resolved that error for me was reinstalling the OS. Thankfully since Big Sur? (ran this on Monterey so I can't confirm how much this holds true) reinstalling doesn't wipe out installed applications, preferences, etc.

I wrote up how I was able to get past the "not paired" error and successfully disabling SIP here: https://www.bryanculver.com/2021/12/21/macos-unpaired-recovery-system.html

Basic steps I performed:

  1. Backup (just in case)
  2. Disable FileVault (may not be necessary but assumed it would be more likely to just have the OS reinstalled)
  3. Perform Reinstall (following Apple's knowledge base article: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904
  4. Retry Disabling SIP
