you can purchase an external HDD or SSD of sufficient capacity and move your larger files (videos, pictures, documents, etc...) to it. once they are on the EHD, you can simply erase the same files from your internal drive. and, if it's just going to be used for storage, you can use an HDD and save a few bucks over the cost of an SSD. FWIW, i personally keep very little on my internal drive.

Hi, thanks for your help, waiting for SSD to arrive as we speak, as I had to wait till after Xmas to afford to purchase it. My question is: can I leave it connected/plugged in all the time, so always have access when turning on iMac? Big thanks Beverley

i would say that it is up to personal preference. the fact that you have an iMac, it would be easier to leave it connected all the time rather than trying to access the rear facing ports. with my iMac, however, i leave a cable connected to the port and only connect the eternal drive to that cable when i need to use it.
EDIT: the latter method works better for me since i have numerous external HDDs and SSDs.
Big thanks will have a go 👍🏻
you're welcome. :)
Many thanks 😊
