Password, or passcode?
Prior to setting-up FaceID, it was necessary for you to set a Passcode on the iPad. The iPad Passcode serves two purposes…
1) The iPad Passcode enables other security features - such as FaceID - and allows passwords to be saved in your iPad Keychain
2) The iPad Passcode allows you to access your iPad is FaceID fails to recognise the user - or if FaceID is automatically disabled (such as after a reboot of the iPad).
As such, if you are being prompted for a Passcode (not Password), it is the iPad Passcode that you set before.

When you setup the iPad, you needed to set up a passcode before you setup Face ID. You have to remember the passcode, because after a certain period of time, or restarting the iPad, you would need to use the passcode to be able to activate Face ID again. If you have forgotten that passcode, you will need to restore the device to be able to remove it. Then you can restore the last backup of your iPad and setup a new passcode and Face ID. See the instructions here, If you forgot the passcode on your iPad, or your iPad is disabled - Apple Support
