Using iPad as home hub. Does display need to stay on or can it go to sleep?

iPad being used as Home Hub The instructions say the iPad has to be plug in and turned on. Does that mean it can be set to never go to sleep or go dark? The iPad has to be showing home the entire time? This is for using smart devices with not at home.

The "Always On" display Can it be turned off or not displaying when asleep, unless needed? Wife is awakened by the bright display.
