Unable to open zip file ipad

Keep getting error “ the operation couldn’t be completed. Inappropriate file type or format” when trying to open zip on iPad. When I open the same file on my Mac laptop it works just fine. Brand new iPad

Thanks but I’m fully aware of how to open a zip file. This is the reason for the question… despite opening in files and doing exactly what I’ve always done on other iPads it does not seem to be working on my new iPad. The same file does however work perfectly on my powerbook

Hello lashley160,

It sounds like you're running into trouble when attempting to open a zipped file on your iPad. We'd like to help you out with this.

These types of files and folders can be opened on your iPad but they have to be opened in the Files app. If that's not the way you have been trying to open them on your iPad, try doing that next. You'll find the steps in How to open ZIP files on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, specifically this section:

"How to open a ZIP file on your iPad

  1. Open the Files app, then find the ZIP file or archive you want to uncompress.
  2. Tap the ZIP file or archive.
  3. A folder is created containing the files. To change its name, touch and hold on the folder, then tap Rename. "

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Take care.

Thanks for those additional details. We'd like for you to try some basic troubleshooting steps to see if this can help get things working correctly. These steps may seem very simple, but they can successfully resolve issues like the one you're experiencing:

If you experience the same thing after restating and updating your iOS, try downloading the file to the Files app again, and then attempt to open it on your new iPad. Also, if you have any iOS device available you may want to try opening that same zip file on it. This will help narrow down whether it's an issue related to your iPad or to the file itself. Computers handle compressed files differently than iOS does; being able to open something on a computer doesn't mean it's guaranteed to open on iOS.

Cheers!
