Hi,

It sounds like you have some questions about setting up Apple Pay.

I’m happy to help!

First, to set up and use Apple Pay, make sure your iPhone is running the latest iOS, has a passcode set up, and your Apple ID account type is two-factor authentication.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204915

Within the Wallet app, you will find Apple Pay, Apple Cash, & Apple Card.

To use and check out with Apple Pay, you must add your preferred debit or credit card to the Wallet app.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204506

This can be done via Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > add card

or Wallet app > + button in upper right hand corner > add credit/debit card

When you add your card for use with Apple Pay, its important to remember:

  • enter the billing address on file with that bank for the card in order to avoid declined transactions.
  • before the card can be linked with Apple Pay, you must complete the verification process. This includes either a phone call to your bank, a verification code sent via text, or a verification code sent via email. The options provided for verification are not from Apple, but instead go by the information you have on file with that bank. If it is incorrect, you will need to contact your bank to update it before you can add your card to Apple Pay.
  • Once the card is added to Wallet, it is given a DPAN. This stands for ‘Device Primary Account Number’ and is a digital number that replaces your card number when checking out with Apple Pay. This is to protect users card information when checking out with various merchants, whether in-store or online. Merchants will never have your card number in their system.

*Merchants can still issue refunds for transactions made with Apple Pay; having a DPAN makes no difference with transactions, refunds, etc. It simply protects the users card information from being shared with others.

  • if you have multiple devices signed in with your Apple ID, and want to set up Apple Pay on all the eligible devices, you would have to add each card to each device. They will not automatically be added to Wallet.

Now that you have added your card for use with Apple Pay, you can check out in-store and online:

Also found within Wallet is the Apple Cash card. Apple Cash is not set up by default, but is always available to set up.

Apple Cash offers the ability to send and receive money via iMessage, use your balance when checking out with Apple Pay, as well as transferring your Apple Cash balance instantly to a debit card, or via ACH bank transfer.

Important to remember when using Apple Cash:

  • this is a virtual card that exists only within Wallet. This means it can only be used with Apple Pay for purchases, and does not have a card number, account number, or routing number.
  • You cannot withdraw funds from your Apple Cash balance at an ATM or otherwise. You can transfer your balance instantly to eligible debit cards in Wallet, or you can transfer via ACH bank account with your banking information.
  • Apple Cash can only store one bank account for ACH transfers in Wallet
  • You must be 18 to have a standalone Apple Cash account

Last but not least, if you are interested in setting up Apple Pay as well as building your credit, you can apply for an Apple Card within Wallet. The Apple Card is a credit card with Goldman Sachs as the partner bank, and also has a titanium physical card for use outside of Apple Pay.

Facts and Features of Apple Card:

  • Unlimited Daily Cash with each transaction made. Daily Cash is another term for ‘Cash Back’. Daily Cash earned will post on your Apple Cash card in Wallet once the transaction is no longer pending, and if you have Apple Cash set up. If you do not, it will go towards paying down your balance each month.
  • offers financing for Apple products in the form of monthly installments billed to your Apple Card. Your minimum amount due each month includes your monthly installment payment by default
  • the Apple Card is translucent within Wallet at the beginning of each billing cycle, meaning no payment due, and as the billing cycle progresses, the transactions you make with your Apple Card are divided up into Spending Categories. These Spending Categories have a different color for each category. (Example: category shopping = yellow) When you make purchases, the color for that spending category will appear on your Apple Card in Wallet. At the end of the billing cycle, the color(s) with the most spending done in that category will turn the Apple Card that color. Once payment has been made, the card will revert back to its translucent white in Wallet.
