I have enough space with my iPhone 7 and do not want to increase storage

I am retired on fixed income with older iPhone 7 and don’t need more storage. Can I still have ICloud without paying?

Everyone gets 5GB of iCloud storage for free. iCloud storage is different than the storage built into your phone. The storage in your phone can’t be expanded. The iCloud storage is for backing up and syncing your content.

I know I’m old. The terms make it seem to me like if I don’t sign up my icloud won’t work, I can’t get rid of the pop up message and if I sign out of iCloud who knows what I’ll lose off my phone, like I won’t be able to access Apple Pay. And if I do upgrade I’ll have automatic charges for things I do not need and if I share a picture from an album that then that person will have access to my whole album or albums. Maybe Apple is just weeding out older customers or I’ll be forced to give up my iPhone for an android. I’m so confused. I bet I don’t even have 400 pictures on my iPhone 7. Thank you for your time.
