Today's MacBooks if used with the newer "Optimized Battery Charging" option under the newer operating systems (at least Big Sur and Monterey) feature will learn from your usage, charging the battery up to 80% and hold it there. It will then charge it to 100% when the routine anticipates you will need it charged to 100%. You can also choose to manually charge to 100% when you wish. Just don't let the battery run down to nothing and leave it in that state. Otherwise use it as needed.

Thank you for your reply. I have heard contradicting advice. Some say it's best to charge it under 100% and to only plug it in when the battery drains to 15%. Does this now apply to the battery type of the new Mac? Thanks
There is no requirement to try and micromanage the charging process.
If you are near an AC outlet, leave it connected to the charge circuit.
If you need portability, use it on battery power.
