Apple Numbers - Cannot type in header
How do I go about typing text in Apple's Numbers 3 field header?
I can insert date and/or page no in the footer but not text (any)!
iMac 27″ 5K, macOS 12.0

Do you mean in print preview (after choosing File > Print)?
If so, I have no problem clicking on of the three boxes in the footer and typing what I want.
You mention Numbers 3. If you are really still using that version, you should consider updating!

Yes, in print preview...
I can click in the 3 boxes of the footer but cannot type anything in them! I can insert Page Number, Page Count and Date as provided from the Insert menu - but no free text of any kind.
I cannot enter any free text in the 3 boxes of the header either!
My Numbers version 11.2 (7032.0.145) which I gather is the latest?
Any further help you can give will be appreciated.
Ivan.
I boot up (restart) my Mac everyday. My macOS is also at the latest viz. 12.0.1.
I have started a new Numbers sheet from scratch several times. It makes no difference!
Would uninstalling and reinstalling Numbers make any difference? Should I try it? What are instructions to do this?
Thanks
Ivan.
Maybe first log into a different user account on the Mac and see if the problem exists there as well. If there is no problem when logging in as another user then it's possible preference files are the culprit.
To uninstall Numbers go to Launchpad, hold down the option key, and click the x beside Numbers. Then go to the Mac App Store and download again.

Ok, I've logged in as a different user and there's NO issue typing in text in any of the header or footer fields. So, it seems that the 'preference' file/s (mine) is at fault, as you suggest? How do I go about correcting this?
Thanks
Ivan.

I'm not exactly sure. Perhaps someone else will chime in.
I would probably try experimenting with uninstalling Numbers and downloading it again from the Mac App Store.
One way to uninstall is to go to Launchpad, hold down the <option> key, and click the x by Numbers. I'm not sure if that removes all the preference files, though.
The other thing you might think about what makes your user account (the one that's giving you the problem) different from the others. Any special third party utilities installed that might somehow interfere with input that aren't active in the new test user account?
SG
I have Uninstalled and re-installed the Numbers app, under my 'problematical' username / profile. It has made NO difference, still cannot type free text in any of the header or footer fields. The other users accounts (2) continue to work properly as before.
I am not sure how to identify the differences between user accounts to see if some change/s need to made.
I guess one other way is to delete and recreate my user account? I am unsure how all the objects that were created previously can be recovered to the new user account though. I certainly do not want to loose them.
Any further ideas?
Thanks
Ivan
It's working fine here with Numbers 11.2 and MacOS 12.0.1.
Have you tried restarting your Mac? That often clears up unexpected behavior like this.
