Apple Watch set up

Hello, I am trying to set up an apple watch that my dad previously used. I reset the settings on it and am trying to pair it to my phone (I don't have my dad's phone with me). Once I start to set up the pairing steps it says I need to update my watch and when I select to update it, it says it's not connected to the wifi, and thus it cant update it. I'm not sure how to connect my watch to wifi seeing that it's not paired to my phone and I don't have the old phone with me.
