Chances are one or more of your Login Items are either missing or corrupted.
Try the following:
- At the login prompt, enter your user account password ... but DO NOT click on the Login button.
- Hold down the <shift> key, and then, click on the Login button.
This should temporarily bypass any items in the Login Items for this user account. If your Mac now properly displays the macOS Desktop, you know that it was one of those items.
