Can "Find My" still work with cellular data disabled?

I want to disable cellular data on my kid's phone but I still want to have Find My enabled.

If I keep overall "Cellular Data" toggle ON and disable it individually for all apps except for Find My, it doesn't prevent them from installing a new app and allow it to use cellular data, thus draining all their cellular data quota.

So, can I switch off Cellular Data so no current or new app can use it, except for Find My?

Hello,

yes turning it off individually for all apps will indeed prevent them from using cellular data. If you wish to restrict your child from accessing certain apps then you can simply access the parental control under the “screen time” option in settings. If you scroll down your will find the “allow changes” section which allow you to restrict you child form changing it’s cellular data settings.

You can allow changes to other settings and features.

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
  3. Under Allow Changes, select the features or settings that you want to allow changes to and choose Allow or Don't Allow.

Here are some features and settings that you can allow changes for:

  • Passcode Changes: Prevent changes to your passcode
  • Account Changes: Prevent account changes in Accounts & Passwords
  • Cellular Data Changes: Prevent changes to cellular data settings
  • Reduce Loud Sounds: Prevent changes to volume settings for safe listening
  • Driving Focus: Prevent changes to the Driving Focus
  • TV Provider: Prevent changes to TV provider settings
  • Background App Activities: Prevent changes to whether or not apps run in the background

hope you find what you needed

I do have Screen Time setup and I tried what you suggested:

  1. I went to cellular data and set the main toggle ON.
  2. Then I turned it OFF for all apps except for Find My.
  3. Finally I went to Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and prevented changing cellular data.
  4. I noticed that my kid can't change cellular data settings. Good so far.

Problem is, when a new app is installed, it automatically gets cellular data enabled for it without asking. I would expect it would be the opposite: cellular data disabled without asking.

So my original problem remains: how to switch off Cellular Data for every current AND NEW APP, except for Find My?
