If a firmware update is available, when you connect your AirPods to your iPhone, it would appear when going to Settings > Bluetooth. Tap on the i icon next to your AirPods. Scroll down to the About section. There you should find the current firmware version number. If you believe there is an update, you may manually "force" it. However, AirPods firmware updates are normally done automatically.

If you do wish to force it, give the following a try:

  1. Place your AirPods in their charging case.
  2. Connect the charging case to a power source.
  3. Verify that your AirPods and iPhone are physically close to each other.
