Creating folders in Numbers

Monterey 12.0.1

It took me well over 30 minutes and is just a bout the most convoluted process I have ever experienced.

I can't just create a folder in Numbers.

I first have to create it in iCloud Drive.

Then I have to Name it.

Then I have to move the new Numbers spreadsheet to iCloud Drive.

Then I file the new Numbers Spreadsheet in the New Folder.

Then if I'm lucky I get to move the new folder with the new spreadsheet into Numbers without it becoming an alias and/or disappearing the new spreadsheet or a host of other nightmares.

Wouldn't it be easier - since Numbers is in iCloud Drive - to allow users to just create a file there?

Sheeeeesh !!!!

And if I'm lucky I can go back to Numbers now and still find them. There.

You should be able to create a new folder via the standard MacOS save dialog:

You can get to this via File > Save, or via option File > Save As, or by clicking the document name at the top, clicking the Where: dropdown, then Other ...

Before clicking the New Folder button you navigate to the location where you want the new folder (say, iCloud Drive) just as you would in Finder.

Quick and easy.

Hi Alice,

Unless I'm interpreting your post incorrectly, that does not seem to be a new 'feature'.

"I can't just create a folder in Numbers."

This has been true since at least version 3.

Clicking the Document name ("Untitled"+ a serial number if you have more than one "Untitled" document open) opens a dialogue in which you can create a name for the document and choose a location in which to store it. The choice, in version 3, is restricted to 'top level' folders, and no option to create a new folder is presented.

"Wouldn't it be easier - since Numbers is in iCloud Drive - to allow users to just create a file there?"

Possibly, but that's not the choice that Apple appears to have chosen. Applications and Documents are separate categories, and each has it's own folder(s). Should you want a separate folder to contain (all of) your Numbers documents, you should be able to create one in Finder (on your Mac) or in iCloud Drive. If that folder is at top level within Finder or within your iCloud Drive account, it should then appear in the locatin choices in Numbers.

(No guarantees, as I've not opened an iCloud account or saved anything on iCloud. Please let me know what you find out if you try this.

Regards,

Barry
