System Update Problem
After updating to the latest version of Monterey for my 2017 iMac, the screen is blank. 20 minutes later, is it safe to just hold down the on button to force a restart?

After updating to the latest version of Monterey for my 2017 iMac, the screen is blank. 20 minutes later, is it safe to just hold down the on button to force a restart?
Please give it at least an hour before forcing a shutdown and restart. If you are forced to shut it down, on the restart please hold the power button for about 15 seconds and then release and see if it starts up.
It is not uncommon for peripherals to cause issues. Glad you found the source of your problem. Going forward, if you experience a similar type of issue. Disconnect all peripherals and then test. If the computer acts okay again then you know it's a peripheral, then it is a matter of determining which peripheral it is.
I found the solution in this YouTube video… I just had to disconnect a USB hub I have connected all the time. Then when I forced restart, the update continued.
