Trackpad and/or MS Word issues on new MacBook Air

When using Word on a brand new MacBook Air (OSX 12), the cursor stops working correctly. You cannot select an individual word, and it is confused about where the cursor is and about mouse clicks. Restarting Word resolves it. More interestingly, if I attach a bluetooth mouse, it works fine, and then the trackpad appears to reset and works fine from then on. This happens intermittently -- say every hour or so. It does not appear to happen in Apple Mail, but haven't tried other apps.

Perhaps as part of troubleshooting, you could try Safe mode to check.

Instruction covers both M1 Apple and older Intel-based Macs.

Since your symptom(s) seem inconsistent or temporary, if the

Safe mode has good effects; it'd take awhile after restart to tell.

There may be a hardware basis, or software; difficult to tell.
