Perhaps if you were to correctly (fully) identify the build model, display size, processor
version, year of manufacture; & those of us who've owned some dozen portable and
desktop older Macs, could help. The early iBook G3 and later G4 (plus PowerBook; G3
and G4) Those, technologically different than later build model MacBook, & MB/Pro.

[This search result also 'shows images' of early Apple portable PowerBook + iBook models.]

You may luck out and find the link to apple's original repository of older tech guides
and user manuals; these would cover the original system use, too. Panther 10.3.x was
the first shipped with G4. Older G4 white iBook differed from earliest 'colors' models.
[The white G4 12-in 1.33GHz & G4 14-in 1.44GHz were last build yr models. Mid 2005.]
There are sources of information, official user guides; and sources for PDF manuals,
and tech papers, etc online still. Most of the recent stuff you'd find, were for MacBook.
Some third party business had replacement parts available, some were exact fit;
others so-so. Batteries? by now, are hard to find; poorer substitutes of originals.
Good luck & happy computing! ☃️🌿

Based on Personal Experience:
A. I’ve Successfully Setting mine Up Anew:
My oldest Apple notebook is a 2002 G3 iBook. I’ve completed setting it up anew. I used macOS 10.4 Panther as the macOS. Got both items at different Goodwill Stores a few years apart. Had no issues with the reset.
B. A Hanging Device:
So, it might be a corrupt install, or an overheating device. If you’re running much newer items and file types, then it may not be coping with the capabilities, thereby causing this hanging. Also, place it atop a laptop cooler while in use, as hardware may not be as strong as it once was way back when.
C. Where to Go:
Maybe go on Amazon or eBay, looking for a few older books on performing this. IMO, David Pogue is an excellent author, and is books run you though quite a bit of things, and as you read through his different editions, you can see the troubleshooting he puts fourth as things change. His is his books found on Amazon regarding MacOS versions: Mac OS X: The Missing Manual, Panther Edition

Hello again:
Had to back track a bit to find some additional links for iBook G4 series
manuals & guides; some may be useful, to delve deeper; & DIY service.
Obsolete and yet still workable, helps to have equal vintage documents.
An iBook G4 (2003/2004) user guide/manual was among those in archive.
Had been offline, but were approved again; some rules changed for DIY.
One site has some of that vintage, those apparently are no longer at
Apple support archive to an extent they once were. I looked; & again.
These archives are spotty; yet G3/G4 iBook white; G3 Colors iBook, Power-
book & some others are represented as well. Some of the repair sites as
PowerBookMedic has PDF service manual copies for online use. Seem OK.
Good luck & happy trails!

David Pogue was a great technical author. When I repaired and donated many Macs, his early books on systems often were among those I also donated to charity thrift stores. And to senior centers in small towns.
That's I found some parts, and books to fix Macs. Used to mail-order dozens of PRAM batteries, unavailable locally; cost me 50¢ each by the gross.
As I happened across a few Mac tech books, copies and re-gifted ones I had duplicates of. His knowledge was legendary and his day job at a major New York newspaper columnist was an outlet for some writings that also led to publication of books. And his writings were among whose which helped, due to lack of other official manuals in semi-rural AK.
My part-time efforts were successful in not-for-profit repair, donation, and reuse of over 600 Macs; helped people within 100 road miles of my residence; between Seward & Anchorage. My personal experience has been hands-on Apple hardware and software; in difficult circumstances, in and near the Chugach National Forest, east Kenai Peninsula, in a small town among the mountains. But not as a professional.
These early authors suggested to get and use the better made more professional PowerBook G3 and G4 due to several issues that plagued iBook G3 and G4 (white) as those were not as industrially sound as metal bodied PB models.
Logic boards in iBook (white poly models) had dismal survival rates. My two never went bad. Had one reedswitch and display related issue; repair done on my first-edition build model (May 2001; G3 iBook White, 12-in, 500MHz, 9GB HDD, 576MB RAM; tray-load CD-RW.) While my last one, a factory refurbished last model 12-inch 1.33GHz iBook G4 mid 2005, was direct from Apple; it did not suffer damages from shippers as previous ones I had ordered..
It also had a complete kit, with accessories; and I gave it away too. After using it to troubleshoot a failed under Apple Care iMac G4 that no local AASP could fix.
And I kept it long after that job was done. It's hard to be alone in the wilderness; save for a few feather n fur buddies; and accelerated changing of weather over three decades in this region. I have varied interests, so my participation, inconsistent from 2008, has little to do with anything ~ except elder care; and helping a relative as sole caregiver.
Thank you for your participation in ASC. Things have changed since initial effort to check out Apple Discussions in May 2003.
My first Macs were after using Apple; and a few years of electronic TypeStar6 when I couldn't get a computer, that sufficed for college level in 1985; as I also was full time bench jeweler, and full time student. As one of several my hats; between urban & rural AK.
Sorry to have added irrelevance to your reply, & I expect edits will occur.
(PS: it's still -14°F outside the door here; glad for no winds.)

Wow! That's quite an honor! Back in 2010, I had my first Mac (17" MacBook Pro 2010). And these were the two books of his I referred to, and have followed up upon as time has gone on. My two books I started with:
