If someone sent me their Apple Pay number do I put that into my messages to pay?

The “Apple Pay number” is not useful for making payments.

You need the telephone number or the Apple ID for the recipient.

You need to communicate with the intended recipient using Messages.

Here is how to send money with Apple Cash and Messages:

On your iPhone or iPad

1. Open the Messages app, then start a new conversation or tap an existing one.
2. Tap the Apple Pay button . If you don't see the Apple Pay button, tap  first.
3. Enter the amount you want to send.
4. Tap Pay, then tap the send button  to review or cancel the payment.
5. Confirm your payment with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

If the recipient wants cash, then they can send a payment request as described in that same article.

NEVER send money using Apple Cash unless you know them well. This feature is for sending money between friends and family members, never strangers. There is no way to get money back you have sent, so naturally, criminals use it to trick people into throwing their money away.
