Sleep and Magic Mouse

I must be doing it wrong. I put the iMac to sleep by clicking on Sleep
under the Apple menu, then turn off the Magic Mouse to conserve the
batteries. The problem is when I turn off the Magic Mouse, it triggers
a loss of the bluetooth link that wakes the iMac from Sleep. Then the
only way to put it back to sleep is to touch the ON/OFF button on the
back.

I wonder if OS X Sleep put the Magic Mouse to sleep to conserve the
batteries. Maybe I don't need to turn OFF the battery hog Magic Mouse?

When the computer is sleeping, the mouse's LED should turn off, so there should be very little power used. That's why moving the mouse won't wake the computer. You have to click it.

If you do want to turn off the mouse, you could do it before you put the computer to sleep, then push the power button, or use the keyboard shortcut (Option-Command-Eject) to sleep the computer.

If you don't want to do that, click the "Advanced" button at the bottom-right of "Bluetooth" system preference and disable waking via Bluetooth. If your keyboard is also Bluetooth, you will need to use the power button to wake the computer.

Thank you very much. Just tried it and the LED goes out when the iMac is put to sleep

One more question. Any need to turn OFF the Magic Mouse with the slider on the back
when you Shut Down the computer?

I checked last night and the green LED goes out when the Mac shuts down. I wonder if
it is still using the batteries?

When the computer shuts down or sleeps, the Mouse goes to sleep.
I have found no difference in battery life between shutting it down all the time
and just letting it sleep.

Thanks.... then there is no need to use to OFF button on the bottom of
the Magic Mouse. I have been doing it wrong for six months.

I still Shut Down the iMac at night but use Sleep when it is not really being used - like lunch time

Not wrong . . .
I did, too.
But after getting lazy, I found it really didn't make a difference, IMHO.
