Browser history on work phone

I was given a new work phone a couple of months ago and for ease of use I logged into my personal Apple ID on the work phone.

I don’t use it much but I clicked to go on safari today and saw that it had all of my search history from my personal phone, including most visited websites etc.

Can my employer see my search history linked to my Apple ID, even if I’m not actually using the device for my searches?

Thanks!

Your employer can’t see anything on your phone other than what you sync to MS Exchange. But you need to be sure not to save things like personal calendar entries and contacts to Exchange, both because they are accessible to your employer, and because they will disappear if your Exchange account is disabled or removed. Go to Settings/Calendar and Settings/Contacts and verify that the defaults are not your work email account.

For search history, go to Settings/[your name]/iCloud and turn off Safari sync.

If the device is supervised device managed by an MDM, the employer can re-set or clear the passcode without erasing the contents to gain access to the device.

to the OP: it is always a bad idea to use any company owned equipment for personal use. You should never store personal data on a company owned device or sign into any services using a personal account on a company device.

Thanks very much both of you.

I have just made a new Apple ID and signed out of my personal on the work phone so it is no longer linked to my personal data.

I guess what I’m really trying to work out is whether they could until now / still can see my safari search history up until today? To clarify I have never used the device itself to search for anything on safari, but could see my entire search history from my personal phone and laptop. I’m worried that I’ve accessed websites that are forbidden by my employer and the fact that the device was linked to my Apple ID and safari account would flag something. To the extent it’s been like that for a couple of months now you would imagine they would have already said something, but just a bit paranoid!

Thanks Lawrence. Just to clarify - I’ve now deleted my personal Apple ID from my work phone and set up a new Apple ID linked to my work email. I realise in hindsight it was stupid to mix the two.

I have never visited a website on the work device itself, so have certainly not accessed restricted websites on the work device. I have however accessed restricted websites on my personal mobile and laptop, and that search history was coming up on my work device. Do you think it’s possible that my employer would have remote visibility over my search history and so could see things I’ve looked at on my personal devices prior to now?

My biggest concern is that I have been actively searching for a new job and have been visiting job boards etc. on my personal phone, which are definitely restricted and will flag to IT usually if on my work PC. I also regularly use social media on my personal phone (also strictly forbidden) and I’m worried they will see things like twitter or Facebook that would flag IT/HR remotely just by being in my phone’s search history. I’m probably being paranoid but if I am please tell me for peace of mind!
