Is there a way for a child on Family Sharing to use Apple Pay for in app purchases instead of cred card associated with Family Sharing? Apple Pay at top but grayed out with $17 in credit

The payment method for Family Sharing is automatic:

1. If anybody in the family buys or subscribes to something, Apple first attempts to charge the item to that individual's Apple Account (Apple ID) balance, if any.

2. If a family member does not have enough personal Apple Account balance, any excess will be charged to the Family Organizer's primary payment method (usually a card of some kind). The Organizer's personal balance will not be used for purchases made by other family members. If it cannot bill the primary payment method, the Organizer will need to make another payment method the primary method.

- "Some purchases, including gifts, can't be billed to Apple ID balance and will be charged to the family organizer's payment method." "Some subscriptions might not be charged to Apple ID balance."

Hi,

You can set up Apple Cash Family for all members tied to your FS that are under the age of 18.

As long as purchase sharing is disabled by the Organizer, they can pay for their purchases using their Apple Cash card when added and linked to their Apple ID account.

For members under the age of 13, they can’t add a credit or debit card to Wallet.

Any members over 13 and under 18, they can add eligible debit or credit cards for use with Wallet & Apple Pay.

You can also limit who your child can send money to, lock their Apple Cash account, and get notified when they make transactions.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback.

Since you took the time to comment on yet another post of mine, I will take the time to explain why I am correct, again.

Note that the second post is informative about child use of Apple Pay but does not apply to a child (or anybody for that matter, except the Family Organizer) wanting to pay for in-app purchases using their own payment method. To do that, they need to use personal Apple Account balance, typically by redeeming paper or digital gift cards.

Where on this post do you see anything referencing gift cards or Apple ID balance? I think I may have missed it.

While you have offered an alternative resolution to the users question, it has nothing to do with the actual question.

For the purpose of this question, the user is asking about using ‘Apple Pay’ in other words, Apple Cash, for a child’s account tied to his/her Family Sharing. This is an option for the user, and the child, by setting up a feature called Apple Cash Family.

How would this feature not apply to a child, or ‘anybody for that matter’, excluding the Family Organizer, when this feature was created for the purpose of members of FS to be eligible to have an Apple Cash account while under the age of 18?

I would think that if members of FS are able to have their own Apple Cash account with Apple Cash Family, they would also be able to use Apple Cash as their primary payment on their Apple ID, no? I guess this article is wrong, then?

That set aside, for the users issue specifically, they state that ‘Apple Cash is greyed out at the top.’

It sounds as if Apple Cash needs to be removed from primary payment on that Apple ID and then re-linked to the Apple ID.

This can be done by removing the payment within Settings > Name > Media & Purchases > View Account > Manage Payments.

After removed, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay. Disable Apple Cash at the top, then swipe it back on. > Enter your Apple ID password > Tap on the Apple Cash card where it says ‘Not Set Up’ > tap Continue.

Once Apple Cash has been set back up, it can be linked to the Apple ID again for a payment method to use with purchases.

However, If Apple Cash Family has never been set up, the child’s birthday is incorrect for their Apple ID, and they already have an Apple Cash account, it would be considered expected behavior for the Apple Cash card to be greyed out on their Apple ID. It has been restricted due to not meeting the requirements of having a standalone Apple Cash account.

To resolve this issue, the user must contact Apple Support to close the restricted Apple Cash account, confirm the child account is using the correct DOB, and then they will be able to set up Apple Cash Family for the child account, and use Apple Cash as primary payment on their Apple ID moving forward.

Hope this helps clarify!

The basic thing is this topic is about in-app purchases made under Family Sharing. Under Family Sharing no family member can use anything other than personal Apple ID balance to pay for something related to the App Store or iTunes Store. They either have personal balance or it gets charged to the organizer's primary payment form (which can be Apple Cash in some locations but it can't be anybody else's Apple Cash).

Your presentation about child use of Apple Cash (which is kind of included in the general Apple Pay category) is certainly valid for other use, but does not apply to App and iTunes Store purchases under a Family Sharing scenario.
