Why need to update "Forward to" email to match the email in Mail for Hide my Email

I assigned the “Forward to” email to a third-party email address, e.g. @outlook.com or @gmail.com.

I did not setup third-party mailbox in my Mail App. My Mail App is purely to receive emails that is sent from @icloud.com email address. Similarly Gmail app to send or receive emails that is sent from @gmail.com.

I have no issue receiving the redirected “Hide my Email” email to any of third-party mailboxes.

I updated my iPhone to iOS 15.2 and try to use the “Hide my Email” feature. Unfortunately, my “Forward to” email was not one of the emails in the Mail App. Either I have to change the “Forward to” to one of the emails that matches in Mail app or I don’t use this feature.

I notice "Hide my email" feature in Apple Mail app will only work if your "Forward to" is @icloud.com email address

Why the system prompted 'Update your "Forward to" email address" when I tried to use the feature in Mail App.

Why can't Apple allows user to use email address that is not used in Apple Mail app.
