Preferences error
I am unable to get into any preferences on settings, the error reads " Preferences error, could not load ______ pane"

Try restarting the computer in the Safe Mode. Hold down the Shift key on restart. Be patient as this can take up to 10 minutes whole the operating system is doing repairs and emptying caches. The see if it works. Next, restart and recheck.
