go to the app store and "get" Mactracker. i didn't know it had the capability, but you can choose a category in the left sidebar and enter the device's serial number in the search field. then double click the model in the right panel to find the specs.

neither of those devices are saved in "my models" but Mactracker found them by serial number all the same. :)
Wow !!! This is an excellent tip. Please do create a User Tip for it; I’m sure it will be quite popular.

You will get some limited information by entering your serial number in the following link: Check Your Service and Support Coverage - Apple Support.
While not its purpose, the Warranty check site will give you the model type like what is shown in About this Mac.

great, thanks! i guess i'll write my first user tip. :)
I stumbled on an article this afternoon that happened to mention another way to get the tech specs from a serial number, this one directly from Apple: Apple - Support - Technical Specifications.
You may want to mention this alternate way in your User Tip.
Happy Holidays !!!

TY. :) do you really think that would qualify as a user tip? there's not much to it. i only tried it a few minutes after first seeing this question.
I do believe it is worthy of a User Tip. It is not the quantity that matters here but the usefulness of the User Tip. It doesn't have to be long to be useful to a lot of contributors and users.

i sure wish you had found that before encouraging me to write a user tip. i feel pretty stupid now. :(
No, please don't feel bad. You can edit your User Tip at any time to refine it. Adding a second option gives more choices to the contributors and users. And some of them might prefer the Mactracker option as it has a more user-friendly interface.
And thanks to you, I learned today 2 different ways of getting this information. And you can be certain that I'm not the only one who would benefit as well.
