When I try to start Motion I just get the What's New in Motion menu then I click continue and the ball of death appears. Motion worked just find until a week ago. I deleted the preferences and reload the app but nothing. Any clues? FCPX runs just fine.

Actually the culprit was a third party plugin in the Motion Template folder. Once I removed them Motion opens just like new.

Does it start if you double-click on a Motion project?
Also: what version of macOS? You may want to update Motion to 5.6 if you are at least running Big Sur.
