Safari 15.2 hard freeze on iMac running Catalina

Try this. Open any webpage and select File->Save As...

Safari 15.2 on fully updated Catalina 10.15.7 freezes hard and requires a force quit and reopen to get back.

File->Export as PDF... works normally.

Anyone else?

Hey there lkrupp,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities about this issue with saving a web page in Safari. Upon our test using the same macOS, we had no issues. Test this out in safe mode and a new user account to isolate the issue and see if this is related to certain settings or login items. These links can guide you on how to do this:

Take care.

Thanks for the confirmation. I’ll try doing what you advise and see what happens. The 'Save as...’ feature is probably not used all that much by the majority of users. Fortunately, as I said, the ‘Export as PDF...’ works as it should so I can save a web page if I need to. Not a show stopper but another bug to be reported and squashed at some point.

Update: I can confirm that killing "com.apple.appkit.app.xpc.openAndSavePanelService” unfreezes Safari.

Issue persists in Safe Mode and other user accounts (I have seven user accounts on my installation for family members.)

Also look here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253482513?page=1 and I do have the same problem. Escape works, but still not able to save. There is clearly a connection between the Safari 15.2 update and Catalina, because it occurs with me on 2 different iMacs and only since the update to Safari 15.2. I have to live with it now until I eventually update to Monterey. Until then, I help myself now with save as PDF.

I have the same issue. I have tried Safe Boot and setting up a new user, to no avail. As noted above, export as PDF works. I HAVE found that if I hit my Enter key, I get an html file, not a .webarchive. And that unlocks Safari. But no way to tell it where to save it, or to get a .webarchive.

I am so glad I found this thread. I thought I was due for a Catalina reinstall from the Recovery partition! I was sure I had somehow corrupted my OS.

Thanks to all.

Another way to save the HTML source file in this situation is (1) to show the page source code then (2) control-click on the file at the top in the left window, and select "save file" from the pull-down menu. This allows you to change the file name and/or change where it saves on your computer. Showing the page source requires that you have (1) set the "develop" menu option and (2) either (a) control-click on the web page and select "show page source" or (b) select the "show page source" option under the "develop" menu.
