Time Machine stopped backing up

Suddenly, out of the blue my time machine stopped creating backups and displaying this error message.

Time Machine could not back up the disk “Macintosh HD - Data” because a snapshot of the disk could not be created.

It is created on a Promise 10TB RAID. There is 9.33TB available

OS is BigSur 11.6.1.

The RAID is and always has been formatted as MacOS Extended (Journaled)

The last successful back up was 4 days ago (12/11/21) at 11:0 PM and every hour prior to that.

No permissions have been changed.

I can create folders on the RAID and the RAID shows no errors.

When I enter the time machine I can view all the backups.

Thanks for your responses.

the issue ended up being a bad hard drive despite all the Apple hardware checkers reporting no errors on the drive and file system analysis reporting no errors.

replaced the drive and everything is working perfectly now.

Hi there l3571s,

We certainly understand the need to create backups using Time Machine, as we periodically create one of our own Mac. Let's team up to get it working right.

To start, we'd like to better understand what's happening, along with ruling out some basics:

  1. Have you been able to test another external storage device to make a Time Machine backup?
  2. What about testing the affected hard drive by copying one file to it?
  3. Does the message provide any other details about this? The more details you provide, the better equipped we'll be to assist.

Cheers!
