Word Docx compatibility with Pages

Dear Community, I am concerned about an issue that I recently had with a colleague when trying to edit a paper. If a person sends a word docx document to me and they use Microsoft word and I use Apple pages, will the document be incompatible to the point that a number sequence within the document is changed? For example: if the document contains the number/statement sequence 1. xxx 2. xxx 3. xxx and I open the word docx on my MacBook pro set-up with pages can the sequence be changed to 7.3.1 sss 7.3.2 sss 7.3.4 sss so that the sender and I are unable to discuss editing 7.3.2 sss on my end because on their end it is 2. xxx ? Or does word docx and pages incompatibility manifest another other way? Thank you!

Test. Pages is not a Word clone, and features unique to MS Word and not Pages, will not translate into the Pages internal document format, and on export back to Word, unique Pages features will not translate well either.

If you were using MS Word, you would always open/edit/save in the native Word document format and avoid the minefield of Pages translation.
