Because you can have different Apps and different windows of the same App on different desktops.
You can go to the other desktop, and control+click on the Safari icon, and click on New Window, to get a completely independent Safari window on that desktop which is not tied to any other windows or tabs you have open on another desktop.

Discovered this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3hUk0zsxc4 which was helpful, but his desktops are all blank. How does he start out with that? My desktop is jam packed.
Thanks for your patience with me. :-)
He simply does not store a ton of files in his desktop folder, nor does he have any system icons like hard drives or external storage icons showing up there. Basically, if you want a clean desktop, don't save stuff to the desktop. Use folders in your Documents folder to organize your files and pictures instead of just throwing everything on the Desktop.
If you open the Finder, and then click on "Desktop" on the side panel, or in the Go Menu at the top it will open the Desktop folder. All the files you see on your desktop are saved there. If you don't want to see them on the desktop screen, then don't save them there.
You can of course create folders and sort your files into those folders. Then the folders will be seen on the desktop screen.
For example in my Desktop folder I have 2 sub folders. The current project I am working on now, and a relocated items folder which the system creates automatically.
That's the only thing aside form my hard drive icon and my external drive that I see on my desktop.

If you want to have different things on different desktops then consider making folders and labeling them so you now what everything corresponds to.
