Should I use SMS or MMS

After being told my text messages weren’t received I looked to see how they were sent. I see SMS is switched on MMS was off. What is recommended?

I prefer using WhatsApp but the person I was messaging doesn’t use it.

Between iPhone to iPhone you should activate iMessage. It is Free but needs internet.
For iPhone to Non-iPhone device you need to use SMS which works on Voice Protocol (Does not need Internet) of your Carrier. Similarly MMS needs to be enabled by your Carrier and will need data plan from your Carrier for it to work between iPhone and Android device
WhatsApp needs internet either over WiFi or Cellular Data
