My phone updated recently and deleted all my text messages older than a year. My father recently passed and the update made me loose all my precious texts from him. How do i get them back without having to reset my whole phone?!

If you have a device backup that contains the messages, and you do NOT use messages in iCloud, you can erase your device and restore from your backup. Otherwise, it's unlikely the messages will be retained.
