I bought more icloud space but iphone storage still says its full

Ok, So I just purchased some icloud storage because I am tired of my iphone always saying it's full (as far as storage). I usually just go in every now and then and delete tons of photos, emails, etc., but I went ahead and got the $0.99 icloud subscription today. However, while it shows that my phone now has plenty of icloud storage available, my phone storage is still just as full as it was before. I tried resetting my phone and closing all my apps to give it time to catch up with itself, but my iPhone storage still shows it is full. What is the point of buying more icloud if it doesn't affect my iPhone storage at all? Is there a way to fix this or should I cancel my subscription?
