Default to mobile number

If I have a contact that has multiple phone numbers, but only 1 is a mobile number. Why when I go to text that user does iPhone not default to that users mobile number?

Example: I open a new text message and in the To: field I type "Mike" it will enter Mikes Home phone number not his Mobile number.

It seems to me iPhone would be smart enough to know that if I am texting someone, I would want to go to their MOBILE number.

text when a contact has more than one phone number how does one select the correct number?

How does the message app know which phone number to use for a contact that has multiple? How do you select which phone number to use for contacts that have multiple phones (work, home, mobile)? I select the addressee by typing their name. If you don't remember if they have multiple numbers, what order or selection criteria does IOS use? I would think it would use mobile, but that does not always work.
