How does the Apple Music family plan work?

Can each member of the family access the subscription on multiple devices? For example, can my son access with his iPhone and/or his MacBook Pro and still count as "one" family member of the six allotted in the family plan? In other words, is each family member recognized by e-mail address, or by device?

By Apple ID.

Up to six Apple IDs within the same Family Sharing group will have Apple Music available across all of the Macs and devices associated with each Apple ID.

That might be three people, each with two separate Apple IDs. Or six people, each with one Apple ID. Two people, and four very spoiled cats. Etc.

Apple subscriptions are associated with an Apple ID, and not with devices or email addresses.
