Rented film that can’t be watched without Disney subscription

My father rented The Muppets Christmas Carol for us to watch as a family. To watch it we are asked to install the Disney Channel. We then have to create an account with the Disney Channel and to pass go we are asked to pay for a monthly or annual subscription. We don’t want to signup to the Disney Channel just to watch one film, let alone pay for a subscription.

Surely Apple is not selling films without first warning that more expense lies ahead in the form of subscriptions? We’ve been sitting around for ages trying to figure this out, wasting our evening together.

Where do we go from here please?

iPhone 6s, iOS 13

Sounds more like his selecting the wrong icon.

If it was actually rented from iTunes, then the Disney Chanel should not be involved at all in any way. If he clicked on the Disney Channel then his not actually accessing his rental from the iTunes Store, but attempting to watch the version on the Disney Channel or Disney+ which does require a subscription.

Make sure he is selecting the Watch Now from the iTunes Store option. and not the Watch on the Disney Channel option.

for example I own the Avengers, and I can watch it on iTunes for free, but it also offers the option to watch on other services that may require a subscription:

He’s trying to watch it through the same Apple account he bought it through. In that Apple account, when he hits Watch Now it asks him to install the Disney channel in order to watch the film. When installing the Disney Channel it asks him to subscribe to a monthly or annual subscription. It seems that creating an account with an email and password is not enough to watch the film on the Disney Channel. It won’t let him go further without signing up to a subscription. Obviously, he doesn’t want to purchase a Disney subscription just to watch one film he has rented on his Apple account for £3.49. If he had a Disney subscription he wouldn’t need to rent it through Apple in the first place.

Rented movies from Apple TV/iTunes Store can be viewed in the Apple TV app. User will find rented movies in the Library tab. Rented movies are available for 48 hours after start of playback. This is true. The rental may not be showing up as an option directly in the store, but will appear in the Rentals section of the Tv App for playback.
