How to add a subfolder in Mac Mail with OS Catalina

I used to be able to add a subfolder. Now that I'm using Catalina 10.15.7, it is not working.

I click in Mailboxes under On My Mac.

Then I click/choose the folder I want the subfolder in and choose from dropdown menu New Mailbox.

I name it.

Then I drag it to the Mailbox where I want it.

I goes into that folder.

But then all the other mail disappears that was inside that main folder.

I have to delete the subfolder in order to get the mail that was saved inside that folder.

What am I doing wrong or is there a bug?

Any ideas? Thanks,

Marguerite

So you have something like this:

where M is a folder (or mailbox) and G is a subfolder of M.

If you select G, you will only see the contents of G; if you select M, you should still see everything that was in there.

You seem to be saying that in your case, you select M and see nothing, then delete G and the contents of M magically reappear.

I have never seen anything like that.

By the way, no need to create something elsewhere, and then move it.

You can control-click on M, and choose New Mailbox... and it will be created under it.

Hi Luis,

Oh, that answer was so clear and it did the trick.

I think I was right clicking on the main Mailbox folder and then dragging the new folder into the "M" (desired) folder.

That obviously was not working.

At least I think that is what I was doing.

After writing my question and getting your answer I had shut my laptop down.

So it could have been that the problem was a glitch that re-booting cleared up.

But now I will save your reply in case I ever have the trouble again and it turns out to be user error....again.

Much appreciation for your clear instructions and time to help.

Marguerite
