Two-factor authentication is enabled by default on new Apple IDs and cannot be turned off.

If you have an old account (several years old) and recently activated Two Factor Authentication note this section of an Apple support article:

"Two-factor authentication for Apple ID" - https://support.apple.com/HT204915

-->

"Can I turn off two-factor authentication after I’ve turned it on?

... If you recently updated your account, you can unenroll within two weeks of enrollment. Just open your enrollment confirmation email and click the link to return to your previous security settings ..."

No. It is required and now, and cannot be turned off on new Apple IDs.

However, in normal use, it should be completely transparent. You should not encounter it unless you are logging into a new device or logging in to an Apple online service from a new web browser.

Once you log in to the device it becomes trusted and will not require a code again. Same with the browser. You can set it to be trusted and you should not need a code again.

If you are getting repeated code entry requests then there's something wrong.
