How to control keyboard backlight using keyboard shortcut on 2021 model

Just got a 2021 M1 model and I see that the that backlight adjustment keys are no longer included in the function row.

So far it seems like my only options are to auto-adjust the keyboard brightness in low light and to have it turn itself off after a number of seconds. I always disable auto-features like that as I find them annoying, but I definitely don't want to shine a light on the keyboard every time I need to log-in in a dark room.

Any way to add a keyboard shortcut for this?
