Apple TV App Library has disappeared on my Mac

Hi! I have seen many topics in these forums but there never seems to be any solution I can find. Starting in early November, I noticed the recently added portion of the TV app stopped updating recent purchases. Generally, watching a new movie or show would eventually cause it to update. After 3 weeks of watching new purchases with no update, i got desperate and decided to sign out of the TV app on my Mac on thanksgiving day. This is when the true nightmare began. The entire library disappeared and it also began telling me that some of the movies and shows I have bought were no longer purchased and needed to be bought again. This became a total head scratcher.

I began doing everything I read in other support topics. i had signed in and out a million times. I had restarted in safe mode. I even downgraded back to Big Sur etc etc etc. I have no hidden movies or shows. After several days I then had 3 different calls with apple support which walked me through everything again. These calls totaled about 12 hours of talking time which were all ultimately disconnected when finally referred to multimedia support. I have tried everything, and the common thread I seem to find is that this happens to folks with large libraries. I have about 2500 movies and shows so that is what I am thinking is the issue. The last call with support told me before the disconnection was the only resolution is download it all. Which is a step I do not want to take, and it also doesn’t fix the missing purchases either. This just seems like once you get into this library hole, there is no getting out of it. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

Well, i got no assistance, but just in case you run into this situation where you have a large movie and TV library that just disappears. Go into your account settings then select purchases and start to hide movies. I hid about 500 movies and rebooted a few times and 80% of my library is back.

Yep, I agree. I am still dealing with it slowly since thanksgiving. I have about 2100 of my 2400 showing. I have to hide a couple hundred movies at a time then slowly unhide them to get them to appear. Whatever you do, never sign out of the TV app because if its not functioning, they will all disappear again. The problem for me is that I use the Tv app on the imac to manage the content for my family on the apple tvs we have. Needless to say, this has been very painful for them. Let me know, if you are ever able to find a faster solution. I have still been googling trying to find other solutions to this, but it seems like no one ever gets a answer.

Hi Paul, go into the apple TV app account settings. It's located in the account tab in the tool bar of the Apple TV app. Click account settings. Once in the account settings page of the app, go down to downloads and purchases and select manage devices. In the manage devices screen, scroll down to the bottom and select purchased (it's in real small writing). Once inside purchased select the movies tab and you should see your movies in order of date bought. On the left hand side of each movie you should see a "X". Click that "X" and the movie will be hidden. You can find the hidden movies in the unhide section in the accounts settings section. I had to had to hide about 400 movies to get things moving. I then exited the app and restarted my iMac and just left the iMac on with the TV app open. It could take sometime, but try playing or downloading a few movies or shows that you haven't hidden through the store just to get things moving.

I know that pain. I now know I will never sign in and out again because that's what seems to nuke everything. You can still hide and unhide with an empty library. You would just have to do it on your TV app on the MacBook or Mac mini. The iTunes Store is actually buried deep in your account settings inside the TV app on your MacBook/mini. Go to account settings and log in with your Apple ID. Once in, select manage devices and at the bottom in small print you will see a bunch of links. Under the FEATURES heading you will see a link that says "Purchased". Click "purchased" and it will take you to all your movies and shows and you can hide again by clicking the "X" on the top left corner of every movie title. I hope this helps.

Let me know how you make out. I have had varying results where the unhidden movies pop in a few minutes or like a few hours. Another thing that helps force the mac TV app to think is holding down the option key when clicking the app to open and select your tv file to load. You will actually see a spinning wheel as the TV app tries to load. Good luck!

Hi Fred. I have had this very same problem since the middle of last year. While I have not found a solution to restoring library so titles can be browsed like before, I have found that purchased items can still be found and watched by manually searching them with the magnifying glass. I have also noticed that, while this issue is affecting both my iPad and iPhone, my library is still (thankfully) completely normal and updating regularly on my Apple TV device. I hope this gives you at least a little peace of mind that your purchases are still accessible. I only wish Apple itself cared enough to fix the problem already.

Hello! That’s pure madness 3 years! How large is your library if you don’t mind me asking? Do you still purchase movies and TV through Apple? I slowed down my buying when everything went on my iMac, but since it all came back in mid February,I started buying again. It obviously seems apple is aware of the problem, but act floored when you say what’s happening to you.

This now has occurred with me (again) on a 5th gen iPad Mini - signed out of my media account in an attempt to flush the artwork cache (a lot of purchased movies lost their widescreen artwork, not downloaded so artwork not retained), but after several days my cloud library has yet to reappear. Probably somewhere in the ballpark of about 700 purchased video titles (movies and TV shows).

Even a restore from a backup doesn't alleviate - not worried about an iPad restore here, my iPhone has the bulk of my media.

Tried hiding and unhiding several titles, but it hasn't triggered the Media Services connection yet to rebuild the cloud library. Right now I'm on a wait-and-see approach for the next week, to see whether something on the server end is triggered.

This became more prevalent under iOS 15, I'd observed. I don't recall major library connectivity issues occurring under iOS 14.

This last happened to me back in March, when my iPhone was returned to me for a battery service. Could not get the library to repopulate after signing in/out, it was caught in the endless "Loading your library" loop.

At the time, the one tech I was able to speak to (without getting disconnected) alluded to some "server bug" that was affecting different services, including cloud media services. Don't have any more information than that - but given that little information at the time, it could also be that this is the case now... difficult to say.

On a side note, I found out that within the TV app on iOS, if your library isn't established, the download buttons from search results (within TV) is disabled. The only way to get purchased titles back on the device is either to 1) download from the macOS TV app and transfer manually, or 2) download from within the iTunes Store app.

My library on my iMac has been updating pretty regularly now about once a week. I just got a new iPhone SE and there seems to be no issue with the library there. The biggest mystery now is why my tv libraries on my 6 Apple TVs stopped updating new purchases about 18 months ago.

My story gets even better, since I last commented...

When the iOS/iPadOS 15.6 update rolled out the other day, I figured that maybe this issue would be fixed at some low-level within the firmware. Updated to 15.6 - didn't do anything.

Went out on a limb and signed up for the iOS 16 public beta program with that iPad mini of mine... didn't do anything.

So I went to the local Apple Store around here, and plunked down over $700 for the new iPad Mini 6... notwithstanding the fact that it's faster than my mini 5, I was taking the gamble that perhaps this whole thing was hardware related.

Brand new device, not restored from any backup...... signed in with my Apple ID/password. Guess what.... the same issue.

I spent about 2.5 hours on the phone the other night with a Senior Tech Support agent. She claimed that by pushing out all of my media purchases on Apple's end should have taken care of it. (I warned her that my purchases go back about 20 years...)

That didn't work either. (and now I have the additional task of hiding the duplicate purchases, undesired titles, etc. once again) So now it's in the hands of Engineering - I was supposed to have received a call back last night, but that didn't happen.

(good thing too - since I nodded off for the night while waiting for the call...)

So I am starting to suspect that this issue may have something to do with any of the following:

1) Accounts having large media libraries (I have about 600 purchased movies alone, give or take some in that library count as being imported manually) exceeding some range (according to Monterey's TV app, my cloud movies alone exceed 2 TB)

2) Unknown issue during the login process to Apple Media Services (possibly in conjunction with Option 1)

3) Unknown account issue with Apple ID

I would have been led to believe that this was a device-specific or an iOS issue at first. But the fact that a brand new out-of-the-box device started to exhibit this same issue when using my same Apple ID login credentials tells me that the common denominator is something with the account.

(mind you, my iPhone has NOT logged out of Media Services - so everything is performing as per usual in Music, TV, Books)

I noticed that the time to login to Media Services (via Settings) seems rather quick, like around 1 - 1.5 seconds. In the past, I noticed this to be at least 3 to 4 seconds before the connection was made. Sometimes faster isn't necessarily better, as this could be indicative of some access denial occurring. (although the device has it appearing that the user is signed into Media Services) But without (easily accessible) logs, it's hard to make that determination as to what network activity is (or is not) occurring.

(note - this was tried on a few different networks, including an LTE hotspot. So it's not an issue with my home network or any firewall)

According to the iCloud specialist I initially spoke with, there were no flags or blocks on my account. She pointed out some of my most recent purchases (my legitimate purchases made from my iPhone), so all of the account information is intact.

And nobody at Apple to whom I've mentioned this issue occurring has heard of this...

Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it? I am still missing about 140 movies that I unhid that just won't show back up in the library. It just stops working eventually. The only place I can actually view my entire library of movies is on my iPhone and the purchases section of the iTunes Store on Apple TV. The even weirder part is that if I log in on a non apple device like a smart TV or playstation/xbox, everything appears as it should with nothing missing. Only my apple devices have issues displaying my apple purchases.

Unfortunately hide/unhide was the only thing that generated anything on my mac. Randomly the 140 movies I was waiting on just showed up last Thursday after about a month of being unhidden. I didn’t do anything they just popped. I have 6 apple tvs, 4 stopped updating in late February of 2021. The other 2 are just completely blank library tabs. Its just become increasingly difficult to manage things and purchases for my family. If I stumble across anything more concrete, I will update this post.

Hi Chuck! Do you have a large movie/TV library? So I have managed to get my iMac library up to date with new purchases. It updates now about once a week. I used the method of hiding and unhiding of just movies because they just seem easier to pop back in to the library. Still no solution for my apple tvs libraries though that stopped updating new purchases now over a year ago.

Hello! Do you have a large Movie and TV library? I haven't had any issues with my iPhone, but the only cure for my iMac is to go into your account settings on the TV app and hide a bunch of movies until some movies start to populate in the library tab of the TV app. Once movies start to populate, start to unhide the hidden movies in your tv account settings on your Mac.
