I just purchased a new IPad Air and transferred my data over from old IPad. I have been using a free copy of Excel and Word for years (still using it in my IPhone) and now it won’t allow me to update or modify my spreadsheets unless I pay a fee. How come? Thank you, John

You can only create and edit documents for free on a device with a screen size of less than 10.1 inches. Otherwise you have to pay for an Office 365 subscription. It’s all explained in the information in the App Store.

That is because Word and Excel are not free. The only way to use the apps on an iOS device, you must have a subscription. If you have a Microsoft Office subscription, you can sign in to create or edit something on the app. Subscription service for Office has been in place for several years now.
