apple.com password vs appleid.com password

Safari password manager tells me my apple.com password needs to be changed. My apple.com password is different from my appleid.com password that is my iCloud password.

What is apple.com? If I change this password, will it have any effect on my iCloud password?

Is there a description of all the different Apple passwords and what they are useful for?

Hi sherryfromhouston,

"I'm a little uncomfortable since the message says my apple.com password has been 'compromised.'"

You are seeing this in the Safari password manager, yes? If so, there should also be the button below.

Clicking that should take you to the website in question, which should be https://appleid.apple.com.

"you are telling me that it would be okay to have the same password for both apple.com and appleid.com." - Yes. Mine are.

Your question got my brain twirling yesterday as I know there was a time where a different password was required for one of the Apple properties. I would always forget only to have it balk at me saying that I could not use the same password for both. I presume that changed at some point, without me taking notice.

Hi sherryfromhouston,

https://appleid.apple.com/faq

For me, I have the same password for both of the website examples you cited. The Safari password manager is not forcing you to change. It is simply making a suggestion. Read through the text it offers, and it will tell you why. What have seen in the past is not that it is balking about a single password across multiple Apple domains. Instead, it is that you are also using that same password on other domains. For example, you are losing into Apple domains with the same password you are using for your bank, etc.

Thanks for the reply. The message is that my apple.com password has been "compromised." I was truly unaware that I have an apple.com password and there is no place I found on the apple.com website to change the password for that website. All of the inquiries lead me to changing my appleid.com (iCloud) password for which I have no received a message (yet). I think you are telling me that it would be okay to have the same password for both apple.com and appleid.com. Since I can't identify a way to change the apple.com password, I'm still not sure what to do and I'm a little uncomfortable since the message says my apple.com password has been "compromised."

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many different apple passwords I have in total and what process would it take to change each one. I am not sure anyone has an answer to this question.
