I have 40+ GB of icloud storage free but “not enough icloud storage” notification

Hi, i’ve upgraded from the XR to the 11 but the 11 has less space so i bought the 50GB icloud storage. In my photos album it’s telling me the photos won’t upload to my icloud because i don’t have enough storage, but when i go into icloud settings there’s 40+ GB free? on my phone storage the icloud photos option is stuck on “updating” with loading circle next to it.

ive tried restarting my phone, changing wifi connections & clearing more storage but nothing is working. any help is super appreciated!

Hey there niamhTaustin,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. We understand you're having issues with syncing your photos to iCloud, and we'd be happy to look into what's going on.

Based on the screenshot you provided, do you by chance have Optimize iPhone Storage enabled in Settings > Photos? If so, it is possible that 50GB may not be enough available storage to finish the upload.

With this setting enabled, a smaller version of the photo/video would be replaced on your device while the full-resolution version is uploaded to iCloud.

From here, we would recommend trying to upgrade to a higher iCloud storage plan to see if the same issue persists. If you need help with that, check out this link here: Upgrade to iCloud+ - Apple Support

We hope that's able to help.

Best regards.
