Iphone just went blank

I went to use my phone and it won't turn on. I've tried reseting it by holding the home and the sleep/wake button but the apple icon never appears no matter how long I hold it. Also I tried plugging it into my computer and Itunes recognizes it but says it's in recovery mode and can't access a phone in recovery mode. How do I get it working again??
