How can I reset encryption password for iphone backup?

I forgot the password for my backup encryption and have followed the steps described by Apple here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205220

But nothing changes. The itunes interface still shows only the option to enter or change the previous encryption password.

What am I getting wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Laura,

I finally figured it out (just a few days ago).

The direction originally given by Apple to 'Reset Network Settings' does not work.

What I did instead was 'Reset All Settings'. After doing this, I connected the phone back to my PC and could create new backups without encryption, and even did a new encrypted backup.

PS: I deleted the previous encrypted backup from my PC via iTunes, just in case. But I wouldn't know if was necessary or not, before connecting the phone after the reset.

Hi Kceyleb,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having an issue with restoring an encrypted backup. We're happy to provide some information to assist.

You started from an excellent resource About encrypted backups on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch It states you can make a new encrypted backup after resetting the network settings.

"If you can’t remember the password for your encrypted backup

You can’t restore an encrypted backup without its password. With iOS 11 or later or iPadOS, you can make a new encrypted backup of your device by resetting the password.

  1. On your device, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset.
  2. Tap Reset Network Settings and enter your device passcode.
  3. Follow the steps to reset your settings. This won't affect your user data or passwords, but it will reset settings like display brightness, Home Screen layout, and wallpaper. It also removes your encrypted backup password.
  4. Connect your device to the Finder or iTunes again and create a new encrypted backup using the steps above."

If you've reset the network settings and the issue continues, test a normal restart of your computer. We also recommend checking to ensure iTunes is up to date. Update to the latest version of iTunes

Should the issue continue reach out to Apple Support to further assist.

Hi Kceyleb,

We recommend trying the reset again and testing. If the issue continues you can create backups using iCloud moving forward.

Thanks for your response.

Please see attached screenshot after resetting my iphone and re-launching iTunes. While it no longer shows the old backups, it still has no option for me to create New Backups. When I uncheck the encrypted backup option, I am still asked for the password, which I can't remember.

As for support, there's no option for Nigeria in the list of covered countries...

Hi Kceyleb,

It's completely up to you on how you wish to continue. Resetting all settings is a less invasive step than a full restore.

You can view information about the resets here: Return iPhone settings to their defaults

If you choose to restore your data, be sure you have your Apple ID and or iCloud account passwords to set up your device after the restore.

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

However, if you continue to have any issues, reach out to the nearest Apple Support team in your region using the links previously provided.

Take care!
